May. 28th, 2013 02:45 pmFandom: Dogma (Technically the film is part of an entire group of films set in the same universe, commonly referred to as the View Askewniverse. However, God only appears in corporeal form in Dogma.)
Name: God
Canon Point: After the end of the film.
History: (Wiki about the film.)
Before the film begins, all of what we in our reality have been taught about Christianity took place. God created everything. Lucifer became filled with pride, believing himself superior to humans (God's clearly favorite part of creation) and ultimately decided he could do a better job than his Father. He tried to take over Heaven, essentially created a civil war, and when things were said and done he and all of those who followed him (or who simply refused to fight at all) were cast into Hell.
The world continued spinning. Around the time of Moses, however, specifically during the plagues set upon the Egyptians, the Angel of Death (known as Loki) quit. He and Bartleby (his friend and a Watcher angel, responsible for talking Loki into quitting in the first place) were cast out of Heaven and sent to Earth to live for all of eternity (in Wisconsin, no less).
Things kept moving forward until God – still angry and vengeful – got tired of humanity running rampant with sin and, rather than admit Lucifer was right and God was wrong (which would have negated all of existence, for the record), decided instead to create a giant flood and wipe out all of life minus a handful of people who could essentially start over and rebuild. However, it didn’t' take but a few centuries or so before once again people were simply running amok with sin.
This time, though, God realized that destroying the world, and the people, wasn't doing the trick. So God instead sent Jesus to teach people the right way to live, and to die for their sins (as the cost of sin is, ultimately, death). It was at that point that God began to change as well. He was no longer angry and vengeful but instead became a loving, compassionate, and benevolent entity. After all, Jesus had paid the ultimate price and made the ultimate sacrifice for humans so there was no longer any reason for God to treat them in such a manner. So long as they believed in the Father and the Son, their sins were wiped clean, which meant they didn't need to see that punishing side of their Lord.
However, it wasn't long before God got tired of simply watching over the world and decided to, from time to time, take a break from Heaven and be a part of it. During one of those sabbatical, He discovered a game known as skeeball and became, essentially, hooked. From that point on, God made a point to take trips to Earth and play the game from time to time, and donned human form while doing so.
The only downside to that was the fact that, should He be injured, but not killed, while in that form, He would be trapped. There was always the slightest possibility such a thing would happen and, when it became obvious it would, the only reason God allowed it to take place and didn't stop it was for one simple reason.
The very last of Jesus' family (a descendent of one of the children Mary and Joseph had that was biologically theirs) had lost her faith and desperately needed help and guidance, and this was the best way for it to happen.
So God went to Earth, choosing an elderly male body this time, and allowed the demon spawn to beat him into a coma. And that's where the film picks up.
After the film, God simply returned to Heaven for a while and, for her next sabbatical, ends up in the Underworld rather than on Earth.
Personality: Most would say that God does not have any significant personality as humans might understand it. Those who have been in her presence, however, know that is a fallacy. Not only does she have a personality, She has both perks and flaws just like any other being in existence. To begin with, she has a rather offbeat, and somewhat quirky, sense of humor. Take the duckbill platypus for example. No one could create something that looks like that and not know how to crack a joke.
She's also a bit mischievous. Such as when Jay is swearing worse than a sailor and essentially mouthing off to her. Rather than simply have Metatron tell him, flatly, who she is, She instead has him peer into Her eyes – and subsequently causes him to pass out. Which isn't to say that her mischievousness is cruel, because it isn't, but it can range anywhere from playful to purposeful depending on the situation.
Of course, being the Almighty, she can also be quite arrogant at times. While some might say that arrogance is certainly justified, and they'd be right, that doesn't change the fact that it's also very nearly caused her some issues in the past. It was her arrogance, after all, the belief that no one would ever dare oppose her, that ultimately allowed Lucifer to gain such a following in Heaven before his Fall.
She also has quite a temper. She doesn't let it show often – or at least, not since before Jesus was born – but it's still very much there. She can be jealous, too, which ties-in with her temper. She's gotten better over the eons at keeping her jealousy in check but She still doesn't like it when people decide to worship someone other than Her (for example). She just isn't going to rip the entire planet apart to keep it from happening like she once would.
Ultimately, though, everything she has done, or ever will do, comes from a place of love. God loves all things with more intensity than anyone can possibly fathom. When someone turns from her, or harms another (particularly in her name), it causes her unimaginable pain. Her heart still aches for the loss of Lucifer at Her side and although she will quickly smite those who try to oppose her, it doesn't mean she loves them any less. She simply has to put the needs of the many above those of the few, no matter what the personal cost.
Skills | Powers: God, is, well, God. She is:
• Omniscient - She is all knowing. She knows each path that a person may walk down, and where each of those paths will lead. Free will does throw a kink into the works because it's simply impossible for even her to predict which path a human will choose to follow but, once they've made that choice, she knows where they'll end up and which two paths they'll have to pick from next.
• Omnipotent - She's all powerful. She can bend reality to her will with merely a thought and there isn't anywhere someone can hide from her should she want to find them. There are no wards to keep her out, no weapons forged that can harm her (in her true form).
• Omnipresent - When not in a human body, she is also in all places (in her reality) at all times. This doesn't apply to her in the game, of course, and in no way signifies that she's the Christian God of the multiverse. She isn't. She's simply one version of this particular deity in one singular reality.
God's voice, also, is a power in and of itself insomuch that only angels (and other deities) are capable of hearing it. It's so powerful and so magnificent that it causes the heads of humans to explode and their hearts to rupture in their chests.
[While she is undeniably powerful, it's important to note that just because she can do these things doesn't mean she will. She very much believes in letting humans sort out their own issues while simply offering them guidance. They have free will, after all, and she will go out of her way to ensure they can use it in any feasible capacity possible.
Also, while in her human form, God can be injured. Technically she can simply will herself healed again (unless beaten unconscious) and good luck sneaking up on her in order to cause her harm, but it's possible. She also, as mentioned, is not omnipresent when in human form as that's simply impossible because the human form is so limiting. And, once again, she is not that Christian God of the multiverse, just the one of the reality she comes from.]
First Person Sample: [video]
[The feed cuts on to reveal what appears to be an attractive enough looking woman with long, wavy brown hair and a pleasant smile. Some may notice that her smile has a bit of a calming effect. It's not overly powerful, of course, but there's certainly the feeling attached that she means no harm.
She doesn't speak but there is a voice being broadcast over each tablet. Although it's technically automated in nature, it doesn't sound that way. There aren't any oddly spoken words and it definitely isn't monotonous. No, this voice is soft and gentle. Similar to the smile, it carries with it a sense of calm, that there isn't a thing to fear from the being it 'belongs' to.]
Well, this place certainly makes an interesting first impression. I suppose I'll give it that much.
[She looks around a little, gives a bit of a shrug, then turns back to the camera. Once again, the voice carries across the tablets despite her never speaking a word.]
The scenery leaves something to be desired, though. There isn't a single skeeball table in sight.
[And then her expression shifts to a curious one.]
How is everyone else finding it here so far?
[She already knows – of course she does – but it would be rude not to ask.]
Third Person Sample: (this is an excerpt from another game; in that game, a large game-wide plot involving lucifer has just wrapped up. obviously she isn't going to run around all over the place, bringing people back to life as she does here. that was something she only did because the mods requested it.)
She didn't arrive via the Library. Her PDA was hidden from view even though her skirt didn't appear to even have pockets. She also didn't look the least bit bewildered, enraged, or frightened. In fact, if anything, her expression was a curious mixture of pride and sorrow. The former was due to the knowledge that Lucifer had been dealt with. Those who were meant to play their parts had done precisely that and the greatest threat that the city had faced thus far was no longer an issue. Which, in part, was why there was also sorrow. Lucifer had been her most loved, once. His fall had hurt her greatly and his destruction had been much the same.
Then, of course, there was the loss of the other lives. Innocent people who had simply been caught in the crossfire. Some died as heroes and others were nothing more than unfortunate victims. The reasons behind their deaths didn't matter to God, however. The point was that they were gone.
But not for long.
Pausing on the stairs of the Library, God closed her eyes. The heaviness that hung in the air, which had slowly been lightening since Lucifer's downfall, was gone in an instant. The cold front that had moved in when he had arrived was chased away by loving warmth that only one such as herself could truly provide. A pause overtook the city, for the briefest of instants, and in that moment everything around her changed. Then, her eyes reopened and she smiled.
Dusting her palms against one another, she glanced around and gave a slight nod. With a smile on her face, she hiked up her skirt, skipped down the stairs, and made her way toward the nearest skeeball arcade secure in the knowledge that if anyone – both survivor or newly returned to life – needed to find her, they would likely know where to look.
